Responsibilities
  • Supervise lower-level Forensic Scientists as they identify, collect, preserve, and examine evidence.
  • Supervise lower-level Forensic Scientists in managing caseloads and assignments and overseeing production of results.
  • Delegate and assign work based on caseload, staffing strengths, and other personnel considerations.
  • Lead activities and provide training and direction for projects, processes, and functions requiring advanced subject-matter knowledge.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to Assistant District Attorneys, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, police and fire personnel, and other stakeholders on evidence collection and preservation, laboratory testing results, and laboratory operations.
  • Perform or participate in validation studies and performance verifications for work groups or units.
  • Participate in training lower-level Forensic Scientists.
  • Provide expert and material witness testimony in court and formal judicial hearings regarding test findings, opinions, scientific procedures, and test procedures.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, revising, and following protocols and procedures for unit duties.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory administrative policies, quality assurance and quality control requirements, and ANAB accreditation standards.

MassDOT unveils renderings showing new Sagamore Bridge. Massachusetts Department of Transportation unveiled new renderings in July 2026 for the replacement Sagamore Bridge over the Cape Cod Canal. The updated design features wider lanes, expanded shoulders, and dedicated pedestrian and cyclist paths as part of the $2.1 billion Sagamore Bridge project within the $4.5 billion Cape Cod Bridges Program, officials said. The new Sagamore Bridge design will be wider and longer than the existing 91-year-old structure, with two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction and an additional lane on each side to accommodate entering and exiting traffic, effectively creating a third lane for ramps and merging, according to Luisa Paiewonsky, MassDOT's megaproject delivery executive director. The bridge will feature expanded shoulders to improve safety and operations, and its profile will have a reduced incline of approximately 4.5%, down from the current 6% grade, to ease driving conditions and enhance accessibility. MassDOT's July 2026 renderings reveal a barrier-protected, 14-foot-wide multi-use pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, separate from vehicle lanes, allowing two-way non-motorized traffic. The design includes a bench and lookout area near the midpoint of the bridge, facing west toward the sunset over the Cape Cod Canal, as described by Paiewonsky. Lighting on the bridge will be low and subdued to minimize disruption to nearby homes while meeting safety standards, with the capability to illuminate the structure in colors, including purple. Distinct arches will define the new Sagamore Bridge, aligning with the twin-arched design planned for both the Sagamore and Bourne bridges as part of the Cape Cod Bridges Program, officials said. Unlike the existing bridge, which has piers extending into the canal, the replacement's piers will be located on land and designed with a viewing platform at Canal Service Road level, offering public access and new vantage points over the canal. MassDOT plans to construct the main spans off-site and transport them through the canal for installation using cranes, a method similar to that employed for the Iway Bridge over the Providence River in 2009, according to project documents. MassDOT has released flythrough videos of the Recommended Sagamore North and South interchange alternatives, showing reconfigured approach and departure roads intended to improve traffic flow to and from Route 3 and Route 6 near the canal. These visualizations highlight changes to the southbound Sagamore interchange, including added lanes and new ramp configurations. Officials noted that approach and departure road configurations remain subject to refinement as public feedback continues to be collected through meetings and virtual sessions. The Sagamore Bridge replacement is scheduled as the first of the two Cape Cod Canal bridges to be rebuilt, with state approval to proceed expected in fall or winter 2027, according to Paiewonsky and project schedules. The southbound bridge span is planned to "float in" around fall 2031, indicating a major segment's installation via barge transport. Substantial completion of the new bridge is targeted for winter 2034, with demolition of the existing bridge slated for winter 2033. All work, including associated roadway and finishing tasks, is expected to conclude by spring 2037, according to MassDOT's published timeline. The current Sagamore and Bourne bridges, constructed between 1933 and 1935, carry two lanes of traffic in each direction without dedicated shoulders or separated pedestrian facilities comparable to the proposed design, records show. The Cape Cod Bridges Program is a major state megaproject with an estimated total cost of about $4.5 billion to replace both bridges. The Sagamore Bridge replacement alone is estimated at $2.1 billion, according to Paiewonsky. The program is overseen within MassDOT by an executive director of megaproject delivery, reflecting its scale and complexity. Public information efforts for the project include news releases, virtual drives, flythrough videos, and meetings designed to keep residents informed on design developments and scheduling. Earlier concept renderings and design options for both bridges were unveiled publicly, with MassDOT actively seeking input from residents and stakeholders to guide the ongoing design process.

Six MassDOT employees resign amid allegations of overtime fraud. The employees who resigned were facing "imminent termination proceedings," according to MassDOT officials. June 2, 2026 | 1:13 PM 1 minute to read Six Massachusetts Department of Transportation employees who are being investigated for possible overtime fraud resigned recently, according to officials. The resignations come after a monthslong Boston 25 News investigation uncovered an alleged pattern of overtime fraud perpetuated by seven MassDOT employees who worked at a facility in Charlestown. MassDOT leaders opened an investigation, and those seven employees were placed on administrative leave after the report was published. A MassDOT spokesperson said Tuesday that most of the employees under fire chose to resign. "Six employees resigned while facing imminent termination proceedings related to allegations of overtime fraud. Prior to their resignations, the employees had been suspended without pay and were scheduled to appear at disciplinary hearings to determine whether they should be terminated for cause," the spokesperson said in a statement. The resignations have no impact on the agency's ongoing investigation or other "potential action" by different authorities, the spokesperson said. MassDOT's records will reflect that the employees "unilaterally resigned in lieu of discharge proceedings." The initial investigation by Boston 25 focused on Highway Maintenance Worker II employees, some of whom made more than $100,000 in overtime last year. One worker with a base annual salary of $84,000 increased his pay to $240,000 last year. Another employee with a base salary of $91,000 ended up making $228,000, according to the report. Reporters from the station staked out the MassDOT facility in Charlestown where the employees worked, taking note of the time they left and comparing this information to timesheets obtained by a public records request. They found a pattern where certain employees allegedly clocked long back-to-back shifts that garnered substantial overtime pay, despite appearing to leave early in their personal vehicles. Officials are working to identify and take back any dollars obtained through deception. "MassDOT is also pursuing all available avenues to recover any improperly obtained compensation and will seek all remedies available under law," the spokesperson said. The spokesperson did not name the employees who resigned. "The employees are no longer employed by the Commonwealth, are not eligible for employment, and MassDOT remains committed to protecting taxpayer dollars and holding individuals accountable for misconduct." MIT unveils quantum hub. Monday 1st June 2026 New facility targets quantum systems, photonics and advanced packaging. MIT and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts have announced plans to establish the Quantum Systems Laboratory (QSL), a shared-use facility designed to accelerate quantum research and commercialisation across the region. Backed by a $25 million state investment, the new laboratory is expected to serve as a critical hub for next-generation quantum technologies, with implications extending beyond quantum computing into photonic integration, advanced packaging, RF electronics, and high-frequency system design. The QSL will be located in MIT's Building 39 and is envisioned as one of the first facilities worldwide to combine quantum computers, quantum sensors, quantum peripherals, and quantum interconnects within a single research environment. MIT officials say the facility will provide researchers from universities, startups, and industry with access to advanced quantum hardware and specialised experimental infrastructure. While the announcement centres on quantum technology development, the initiative also highlights growing opportunities for the photonics and semiconductor packaging sectors. A key objective of the QSL is the development of quantum interconnects, physical links capable of transferring quantum information between systems. Such interconnects are widely viewed as a future application area for photonic integrated circuits (PICs), silicon photonics, and optical networking technologies. As quantum systems scale beyond individual processors, integrated photonics is expected to play an increasingly important role in connecting distributed quantum devices and enabling quantum networking architectures. The facility's planned infrastructure also reflects the increasing importance of advanced packaging in quantum hardware development. MIT said one floor of the laboratory will support the development of radio-frequency (RF) electronics used to control and interface with quantum systems. Researchers will also have access to advanced high-frequency packaging capabilities and associated terahertz (THz) electronics needed for emerging quantum platforms. These requirements align closely with areas of active innovation in heterogeneous integration, cryogenic packaging, co-packaged optics, high-density interconnects, and photonic-electronic integration. As quantum hardware moves from laboratory demonstrations toward scalable systems, packaging and system integration challenges are increasingly viewed as key barriers to commercialisation. "The new QSL will introduce modern experimental infrastructure to quantum research at MIT and beyond, allowing us to scale experiments and expand into critical domains in disciplines such as biology and chemistry," said Ian Waitz, MIT's vice president for research. MIT also expects the facility to strengthen the regional startup ecosystem by providing access to equipment and infrastructure that would otherwise be prohibitively expensive for early-stage quantum companies. The laboratory will become the new physical home of the MIT Quantum Initiative and is intended to serve as a broader regional hub for quantum innovation. Construction is expected to begin as early as this summer, supported by state funding, MIT investment, and philanthropic contributions. According to MIT, the project is anticipated to create more than 150 construction jobs, along with additional positions across the state's supply chain and professional services sectors. For the PIC and advanced packaging industries, the QSL represents more than a research investment. It signals growing demand for technologies that can enable scalable quantum systems, including photonic interconnects, RF and THz integration, cryogenic packaging, and heterogeneous system architectures. As quantum computing evolves from isolated devices toward interconnected platforms, these enabling technologies are expected to become increasingly central to the sector's commercial future.
